Description

The poor state of the sewerage system is a long-term problem in Moldova. The project proposal focuses on the Moldovan region Centrel and the city of Rezina, and is based on available data within the existing strategies and documentation. In the Central region, only 10% of the population has access to sewerage (the national average is 30%), in the context of the urban environment the goal of the Central region is to achieve sewerage coverage of 76% of the population by 2020. In Rezina, access to sewarage is provided for only 61% of the population, which is not enough for the urban area. The aim of the project is to connect additional 7.4 %, representing 225 households (869 persons). The city is currently completing a wastewater treatment plant - the work will be completed in June 2021. Insufficiently developed sewerage system is one of the factors that create unsuitable sanitary conditions and cause more frequent infectious diseases. The aim of the project is to improve the quality of life through better access to the sewerage system in the town of Rezina and to increase awareness of wastewater treatment. The support will be comprehensively based on two interconnected results: (1) support for the provision of quality infrastructure in the field of water and sanitation - construction of a part of the sewerage system in the town of Rezina (3390 m); (2) working with the public in the town of Rezina and its immediate surroundings and raising awareness of wastewater treatment and a responsible approach to the environment. Within the framework of taking into account the cross-cutting theme of the environment and climate change, the project belongs to category B, because it represents an opportunity for the environment. The built sewerage connection and work with the public will enable improved protection of soil, groundwater and the Dniester River.
