Description

The main goal of the Cultural Centre of Vincent Pallotti, established in the year 2016, is to improve access to pre-school education in the Kibeho region in Rwanda. The centre offers education to children from the poorest families, which would otherwise be begging on the streets while their parents look for daily casual work. Many children are from the Pygmy tribe whose social situation in Rwanda is generally even worse than for the rest of the society. The centre offers these children pre-primary education, nutritional meal and basic health care. Children and their families thus become part of the local community and are able to overcome the existing barriers between them and the rest of the society. The capacity of the centre recently increased from 45 to 106 children. The main activities of the volunteer will be as follows: • Coordination of the activities of the centre in close cooperation with the local community of pallotines and the centre animators • Basic social work with children and their families (selection of new children for the centre, visiting the families) • Administrative and office work • Spending time with pre-school children (common games, teaching) • Organising afternoon activities for children going to school • Report writing, basic financial management • Distribution of nutritional food to other needy children that don’t frequent the centre • Selection of children for the Sponsorship program of the Pallottine community in Slovakia • Identification of opportunities for new projects of Caritas Slovakia in Rwanda The job description for the volunteer will be adjusted based on his/her experience and background as well as the specific needs of the project partner in the given period. Because of the extensive scope of work and the key role the volunteers play in the project we always send minimum of two volunteers in two 6-month-long cycles. The volunteers can provide support to each other and ensure the continuity of the implemented activities. The volunteers contribute to poverty reduction in the local area and upon their return to Slovakia they participate in awareness raising activities on the importance of development work. The project focuses on two national priorities of Agenda 2030 for Slovakia, namely (1) Education for a life in dignity and (2) Poverty reduction and social inclusion.
