Description
The project reflects the critical situation of water shortages, especially in the villages, which hosted internal displaced persons (IDPs), who fled because of the terror of so-called Islamic State. Despite its defeat in 2017, Iraq is still in a phase of gradual recovery, complicated by political, security and economic instability. The situation was complicated by the pandemic and the decision of local authorities to gradually close the IDP camps. People have nowhere to go, they likely seek refuge in villages where already IDPs live, which will increase the burden on their infrastructure. Iraq is also the fifth most vulnerable country to the effects of climate change linked to water and food shortages according to the UN. The main goal is to improve living conditions by building 2 wells for residents of Hatarah and Bagera who will gain stable access to drinking water, which will create the conditions for development and avoid possible tensions between the host and IDP community (20,950 people). The conditions of women and children, currently providing water, will be improved (SDG 5), while the production of plastic waste and the emissions will be reduced (SDG 13). The creation of suitable conditions will be strengthened by training on water protection, cultivation and breeding activities and also drinking regime and hygiene (prevention of COVID-19 if necessary) to prevent the spread of diseases. It will also support the participation of women in a patriarchal society. The project has a positive impact on gender equality and the environment (category B).
